The Ministry of Water Resources and Energy in Plateau State was established in 1999 under the name Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development, later rebranded in 2014 to reflect its expanded mandate to include energy issues. The Ministry is central to the development, coordination, and implementation of policies related to water resources and energy across the state. It plays a critical role in shaping the direction of water and energy sector reforms and providing strategic leadership in these areas.

The Ministry operates through nine departments, divided between service-oriented and operational (technical) functions. The service departments include Administration, Finance and Supplies, Planning Research and Statistics, and Internal Audit. The operational departments, focused on the technical aspects of water and energy services, include Water Supply and Sanitation, Dams and Reservoir Operations, Hydrology and Hydrogeology, Energy Access, and Energy Efficiency.

The Ministry is responsible for the development and coordination of water resources and energy policies in Plateau State. It collaborates with key agencies like Jos Water Services Corporation (JWSC), PLAMWASSA, PRUWASSA, and the Plateau State Energy Corporation, as well as development partners, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations. This collaborative effort ensures that water and energy infrastructure is developed sustainably to meet the needs of the population, promoting economic development and improving public well-being.

The Ministry’s mission is to provide adequate and sustainable access to safe water, sanitation, and clean energy for the economic development of Plateau State. This underpins the Ministry’s efforts in implementing the SURWASH program and achieving its broader objectives for the state.

As part of the SURWASH program, the Honorable Commissioner of the Ministry serves as the Chairman of the Steering Committee, providing oversight and strategic direction for the program’s implementation. The Ministry handles Disbursement Linked Indicator (DLI) 2, which focuses on sector reforms, policy development, and regulatory frameworks that align with national and international water, sanitation, and hygiene standards.
