Plateau is one of the states participating in the Nigeria Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SURWASH) program. This initiative, backed by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the World Bank, aims to improve access to sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in urban, small-town, and rural areas. The program introduces a results-based approach that has the potential to accelerate Nigeria's efforts to provide universal access to WASH services. This innovative approach blends incentives to deliver not only functional infrastructure but also sound policies and strong institutions that will ensure the long-term sustainability of WASH services. The program focuses on addressing critical institutional development and capacity gaps within implementing agencies through technical assistance (TA), ensuring that the necessary systems and structures are in place for effective service delivery. Beyond infrastructure development, the program is committed to strengthening WASH sector institutions through a comprehensive reform agenda. This includes improving the operational efficiency and autonomy of water supply agencies, ensuring the implementation of sustainable policies, and integrating key reforms such as Environmental & Social (E&S) safeguards, gender mainstreaming, and Youth Participation in the program. These reforms are designed to create an inclusive and resilient WASH sector that meets the needs of all communities. The program also aims to enhance WASH facilities in primary schools and primary healthcare centers, ensuring that these institutions are equipped with the necessary resources to serve the population effectively. Additionally, it supports Plateau State’s commitment to tackling open defecation through the Clean Nigeria Campaign, promoting hygienic practices across the state. Plateau is working to eliminate open defecation by addressing behavioral, financial, and market-related barriers to proper sanitation. Through the SURWASH program, Plateau is striving to create resilient, efficient WASH services while actively contributing to the national goal of eradicating open defecation as part of the Clean Nigeria Campaign. By strengthening sector institutions, optimizing existing systems, and developing new infrastructure, Plateau State is laying the groundwork for long-term improvements in public health and quality of life for its residents.
