World Water Day

World Water Day is observed globally every year on March 22 to highlight the importance of freshwater and promote the sustainable management of water resources. Established by the United Nations in 1992 and first celebrated in 1993, the day has become a global platform for reflection, advocacy, and action on water-related challenges that affect lives, livelihoods, and development worldwide.

The theme for World Water Day 2026, “Where water flows, equality grows,” places a strong focus on Water and Gender, recognizing safe water and sanitation as fundamental human rights and powerful drivers of gender equality. The global campaign emphasizes that while water challenges affect everyone, they do not affect all people equally. Women and girls are often the most impacted by inadequate water and sanitation services, facing increased health risks, time burdens, and barriers to education and economic opportunities.

This year’s observance calls for centring women and girls in water solutions by adopting a rights-based and inclusive approach to addressing the water crisis. When women and girls are meaningfully involved in water governance, planning, and service delivery, outcomes are more equitable, sustainable, and effective. Empowering their voices, leadership, and agency transforms water from a source of hardship into a force for dignity, health, and opportunity.

Plateau State proudly joins the global community in celebrating World Water Day 2026, aligning with this year’s theme and reaffirming its commitment to gender equality in the water, sanitation, and hygiene sector. Through the Plateau SURWASH Program, deliberate efforts are made to ensure that women and girls are not only beneficiaries of improved services but are actively involved in decision-making, community engagement, and institutional processes across the WASH value chain.

The celebration also provides an opportunity to highlight ongoing investments in safe water supply, improved sanitation, and hygiene promotion, while strengthening awareness on gender-sensitive service delivery. Plateau SURWASH recognizes that achieving sustainable WASH outcomes requires inclusive participation, protection of vulnerable groups, and the removal of barriers that limit access to services.

By joining the world in celebrating World Water Day 2026, Plateau State reaffirms that where safe water and sanitation are accessible, inclusive, and equitably managed, healthier communities emerge and equality grows. The state remains committed to ensuring that water serves as a catalyst for dignity, opportunity, and a more gender-equal future for all.
