The Plateau State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (PRUWASSA) was established by Law in August 2001 and reviewed by the Plateau State Water Sector Law 2019. The agency is responsible for providing safe drinking water, improved sanitation facilities, and promoting good hygiene practices in rural communities with populations of 5,000 or less. As a corporate entity with perpetual succession, PRUWASSA operates under the leadership of a General Manager and a team of Directors, overseeing both technical and administrative functions.

PRUWASSA’s vision is to be a model of success through efficient and effective service delivery in rural water supply, sanitation, and hygiene education. Its mission focuses on increasing access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, and hygiene promotion in rural communities, through activities that support poverty reduction, good governance, capacity building, and awareness creation. The agency is guided by core values of sustainability, innovation, transparency, accountability, commitment, teamwork, and partnership development.

The key responsibilities of PRUWASSA include assisting local governments in providing safe water and sanitation services, training staff on water safety and hygiene education, and leading efforts to achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) communities through Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) initiatives. Additionally, the agency plays an important role in liaising with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, developing alternative water sources, and promoting sanitation in public places and institutions, all of which contribute to improving the health and well-being of rural communities across Plateau State.
