A disturbing incident has brought to light the challenges faced by sanitation workers in the course of duty. During a monthly sanitation exercise in Jos, a tricycle rider also known as ‘ Keke NAPEP ‘ physically assaulted a Plateau State Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) intern who was attempting to stop the rider for violating sanitation regulations.
This shocking incident highlights the importance of respect and cooperation between sanitation workers and the public. Sanitation is a collective responsibility that requires the active participation of all citizens to maintain a clean, safer, and more pleasant living environment. Regular sanitation exercises not only enhance the overall quality of life but also play a crucial role in protecting public health.
In a related development, PEPSA’s September sanitation exercise saw significant success, with over 600 defaulters fined for various sanitation-related offenses across Jos and Bukuru metropolis. The exercise was enforced by 14 mobile courts, which were deployed to ensure compliance with sanitation regulations.
During an interview at the end of the exercise, the Director-General of PEPSA, Hon. Samuel Nathaniel Dapiya , disclosed that the exercise marked a significant improvement in compliance, with most shops closed during the designated sanitation hours of 7-10 am. This demonstrates a growing awareness among citizens about the importance of environmental cleanliness and public health.
However, not all areas complied with the regulations. The Director-General expressed disappointment with the Polo Motor Park and Farin Gada Market, which remained open for business during the sanitation hours, showing a clear disregard for the state’s sanitation regulations. The incident involving the Keke rider and the PEPSA intern serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by sanitation workers and the need for respect and cooperation from the public. As at the time of this report the tricycle rider has been arrested, and the tricycle impounded pending further action. PEPSA’s efforts to enforce sanitation regulations and promote a clean environment are essential for maintaining public health and well-being.
